Velvet Steel wool

Your words fall like velvet
on some
smooth, caressing
But they scrape across
me
steel wool on wood
Leaving slivers
that pierce my senses
I want to hurl that velvet
back, watch
the barbs connect
see your discomfort
Instead I step away
knowing what
wisdom has taught
is my softness
